CALGARY - The Calgary Flames’ push to rebuild in earnest seems to be even stronger than trades that the NHL team has already executed.

According to Elliotte Friedman of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, the Flames tabled an offer of all three of their first-round draft picks in the 2013 NHL Draft for the first overall pick of the Colorado Avalanche.

The Flames own the Nos. 6, 22 and 28 choices in the June 30 draft.

It’s widely believed the Avalanche will use the top choice to select either defenceman Seth Jones of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks or forward Nathan MacKinnon of the QMJHL’s Halifax Mooseheads. Jones led the Winterhawks to the WHL title but were defeated in the Memorial Cup championship game by MacKinnon and the Mooseheads.

Friedman reported the offer during Saturday’s night telecast of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final.

With three first-round picks and a full rebuild in motion, the upcoming draft is being regarded as the most important in Flames’ history.
