NASHVILLE - Sure, the paycheques and camaraderie of teammates are missed by NHLers when they’re no longer in the game.

But over the course of a year spent on the sidelines, and more than two years between NHL games, Calgary Flames forward Steve Begin found he was yearning for another aspect of life in the bigs.

“What I missed the most was the pain of playing hockey,” said Begin, who returned to the NHL this season. “The pain from blocking shots, getting hit, hitting people. I missed it a lot.”

Begin knows a lot about playing through pain, and has done it constantly during his professional career. Anybody needing proof that attribute is one of his calling cards, need only type his name, St. John Flames and Calder Cup into their favourite internet search engine and see the pictures that depict his grittiness while helping lead his team to the 2001 AHL title.
