CALGARY - From waiver-wire pickup to a big part of the future.

Talk about a wild few months for Joey MacDonald.

MacDonald, who the Calgary Flames claimed off waivers from the Detroit Red Wings in early February, re-signed with the team Saturday, inking a one-year pact worth US$925,000.

If Miikka Kiprusoff retires, MacDonald will likely be relied upon to work with either Karri Ramo or Reta Berra next season.

“It was a no-brainer for me to come back here,” said MacDonald, who would have been an unrestricted free-agent in July. “When a team picks you up off waivers, they’re taking a chance, and they took the chance and it worked out really good here for me. I’m excited.”
