VANCOUVER — Welcome to scoreboard-watching, the upside-down version.

It’s a place where, at this time, a win is a loss.

With the best draft pick possible the goal of the Calgary Flames — OK, not actually the quest of the players, but a vast majority of their fans — the out-of-town scoreboard must also be followed on a nightly basis.

After all, the best possible pick in this summer’s draft in New Jersey is on the line.

The Flames kept pace with Saturday’s 5-2 defeat at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks.

Not only did the loss prevent the Flames from pulling further ahead of both the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers in the overall standings, but it stopped them from gaining ground on both the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Panthers, who also make up the NHL’s bottom quintet.
