Jay Bouwmeester had been in this situation before, but the trigger had not been pulled during the season.

Towards the end of his days with the Florida Panthers, the smooth-skating defenceman was the subject of rampant trade speculation, expected to be dealt to a contending team.

It didn’t happen and the Panthers held on to Bouwmeester.

The Flames didn’t make the same mistake, sending the local product to the St. Louis Blues prior to their encounter against the Edmonton Oilers Monday at Rexall Place.

“We were real close to the playoffs (in Florida) and I stayed and we just missed out,” said Bouwmeester following the team’s morning skate. “We were tied for eighth and we lost out, I think to Montreal, they beat us a couple of times.
