Flames would have lost Ryan O'Reilly to waivers had Avalanche not matched offer sheet

CALGARY - Did the Colorado Avalanche do the Calgary Flames a big favour by matching the offer-sheet given to Ryan O'Reilly?

It would appear so.

According to a report by Sportsnet.ca, the Flames would have been forced to put O'Reilly on waivers after signing him and surrendering a first- and third-round draft choice in the 2013 draft, since the centre played KHL games after the NHL season kicked off Jan. 19.

It's almost a certainty another team would have snapped up the 22-year-old centre who collected 18 goals and 55 points last season.

After benching Brad Richards should the New York Rangers eventually just buy him out?
  Yes.
  Might be a good idea.
  No.
  Not sure.
