Patience key for Langkow

EDMONTON — Imagine the plight of Daymond Langkow these days.

While his Calgary Flames teammates are trying madly to keep their playoff hopes from slipping away completely, the veteran centre is inching closer and closer to a return from the neck injury suffered a year ago.

Just think how desperately he wants to play with the hopes of being a difference maker over the final couple of weeks of the NHL season.

“You want to get in, especially this time of the year — every game is so important,” Langkow said.

“You want to get in and try and help the guys out. Just have to be patient.”

Langkow has been practising fully for more than a week, but his return to game action isn’t upon us yet.

“Nothing really changed — still day-to-day. Nothing new,” Langkow said.

“I feel much better and will just keep working hard and see what happens.”

The Flames say they can fit Langkow and his salary of US$4.5 million under the cap, so it’s a matter of him being 100% ready to play.

However, it makes you wonder whether a 34-year-old with more that 1,000 games to his credit can get up to speed with the game at this stage of the season.

“I can’t answer that until I get the opportunity to play, so until that happens, we’ll have to see,” Langkow said.

“You can only practise so much. The next step will be to get in a game, but when that will be, I don’t know.”

New gear for Kiprusoff

Call it a case of optimism, but goalie Miikka Kiprusoff was practising with new gloves and leg pads Friday.

The equipment was all-white, which may seem boring, but not to him.

“I think it looks pretty good,” Kiprusoff said.

To the Flames, that gear will look better if he’s still using it beyond the April 9 regular-season finale.

Tough time for the kid

Greg Nemisz’s NHL debut was set up to be a tough exercise.

The first-year pro received his first taste in Wednesday’s 6-3 loss to the talented San Jose Sharks.

He ended up a minus-2 in 6:38 of action.
