The news Curtis Glencross would be fined and not suspended caught many off guard.

But not the Flames winger, who was tossed from Wednesday's game against the Vancouver Canucks after hitting Keith Ballard high with his stick late in the second period.

The incident started with Glencross crunching Ballard on the forecheck.

"He comes at me with a crosscheck without me looking. I'm turning around to confront the guy thinking defence — probably get another crosscheck or something. I put my arms up to protect myself," Glencross said. "It's reaction. My stick might have clipped him or my glove might have clipped him or whatever. It was nothing intentional, and the league decided what they did."

The NHL suspended Olli Jokinen earlier in the season for a crosscheck that hit Wojtek Wolski up high. But that was away from the play and after the whistle.

Glencross' actions — although potentially costly to the team at the time because of the five-minute major — were more of an in-the-moment reaction.

The amount of the fine has not been released.

"It's not a big deal. I'll take a fine or whatever," Glencross said. "I'm happy to be back and help my team."
