NASHVILLE — The Calgary Flames are doing some deck chair shuffling by sending rookie defenceman T.J. Brodie to the minors and claiming blueliner Brendan Mikkelson off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks Tuesday morning.

Brodie, who earned a spot on the roster after a great training camp but had some plus and minus moments in three NHL games, will be well suited to a stint in the minors in his first pro season.

When he'll be back with the Flames isn't known, but he'll be a better player for it.

Mikkelson, 23, was Anaheim's second-round pick — 31st overall — in 2005.

The Regina product has played 67 NHL games in which he’s collected five assists and 38 penalty minutes.

He adds depth to the blueline corps, but won’t likely be a top-four player.

He's not expected to join the team in time for Tuesday's game against the Nashville Predators, although the Flames have six healthy defencemen.
