The way the Calgary Flames have lost players to injury before the NHL season has even begun, you could understand the alarm bells going off.

Captain Jarome Iginla left the ice long before practice was over at the Westside Recreation Centre, and nobody would have been shocked if he was injured, too.

“Just maintenance — we were out there for a (while),” Iginla said. “It was just getting ready for Thursday and ready to go full throttle. I can’t wait to play.”

Sutter waived

The Flames placed C/LW Brett Sutter on waivers, likely the first step to sending him to the AHL Abbotsford Heat.

“It’s part of the game,” Sutter said. “I knew after I was off my entry-level deal that was part of it. We’ll see what happens.I knew at start of camp it was a possibility.”

Ice chips

D Matt Pelech, D Staffan Kronwall and LW Cam Cunning were re-assigned to Abbotsford. Pelech and Cunning cleared waivers Tuesday ... The Flames announced a three-year partnership with retailer Rona, which will involve renovating community youth facilities.
