Matt Pelech has put his name on a contract.

Next up is his chance to push for a full-time NHL job.

The Calgary Flames Sunday signed the defenceman drafted in the first round in 2005 to a one-year contract.

Pelech was one of the players mentioned by GM Darryl Sutter as having a chance to unseat a veteran this coming season. In fact, Sutter said it’s expected a few youngsters will make the jump, and said he’ll move a veteran if need be.

Pelech would seem the logical choice among defencemen, even though he has just five NHL games under his belt — all late in the 2008-09 season — and missed much of last year due to blood-clot issues in his shoulder.

Last season, the bruising 6-foot-3, 220-lb. blueliner collected two goals and 10 points in 42 regular-season games for the AHL Abbotsford Heat.

He played all 13 playoff games.
