You knew when Jay Bouwmeester was a youngster, he had high aspirations of a life around the rink.

His career path of choice, however, may come as a surprise.

"When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a Zamboni driver. I really couldn't have cared less about playing hockey," the Calgary Flames defenceman said. "It's funny, I was around the rink enough, I had a real fascination with the Zamboni."

His parents noticed the youngster's affinity with the ice surfacer and, like good parents do, supported it.

"I got a little Zamboni for Christmas when I was pretty young, when I was six or seven years old, and was so happy. It was like the toy car sized ones," Bouwmeester said with a grin. "I did what every other kid would do with it, drove it all over the house."
