WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ABBOTSFORD

J.D. Watt made a great first impression after a summons from the ECHL Utah Grizzlies.

Watt (2005 draft, 111th overall) scored his first career AHL goal, set up another and dropped the mitts for a Gordie Howe hat-trick in the club's 5-3 win over the Toronto Marlies, which boosted the Heat record to 4-1-3.

"It was nice to get the goal but even better to get the assist and the fight," he told the Abbotsford News.

"I'm not going to be a goal-scorer in this league, so I've got to stick to my game, and part of that's fighting."

G Matt Keetley was out due to a leg injury, so the club called up David Shantz. Shantz stopped 25 shots to earn the win over the Marlies ... Carsen Germyn missed six games with a neck injury ... The Heat start the club's second longest trip of the season -- six games -- tonight in Grand Rapids.
