Flames Game Review
By STEVE MACFARLANE, SUN MEDIA
REPORT CARD OVERALL: B OFFENCE: A DEFENCE: B GOALTENDING: B POWERPLAY: C- PENALTY KILL: D WHY FLAMES WON Timely goaltending and a long individual effort by Dion Phaneuf -- we're talking an end-to-end-plus rush that started with a long loop from his own blueline and around the net before potting the winner with a quick release -- saved the Flames in spite of their lack of discipline. UNSUNG HERO Jay Bouwmeester scored his first goal as a Flame, and added an assist, but most importantly was out there in every situation quietly making things happen. SAVE OF THE GAME Dying seconds of the middle frame, the Jackets enjoying a five-on-three advantage, and old friend Anton Stralman with a prime opportunity to smack home a one-timer with the score 4-3 Flames -- and Miikka Kiprusoff slides across his crease in time to deny the former Flame the tying goal. WHAT IT MEANS A little revenge for last week's loss in Columbus, and a second-straight victory for the Flames to join the Colorado Avalanche atop the Northwest. UP NEXT SATURDAY -- Edmonton Oilers at Calgary Flames, 8 p.m., CBC, Fan 960. |
