Watching Barry Karn skate is a treat.

Even for professional hockey players.

"You wonder why he's not in the NHL," marvelled Flames prospect J.D. Watt. "He's so smooth. You know it works. Do it on the ice over and over and it will come natural to you."

One of the premier power skating coaches in the world, Karn has been working with the up-and-coming future Flames during this week's development camp at the Saddledome.

Karn has been working as a consultant for the Flames for several years now, helping them develop their skating skills.

His impact is minute to the naked eye, but it will make a difference, he insists, with repetition.

"It took Tiger Woods six months to change his swing, so it takes a little while to change the way you stand over your skates, but it makes a big difference for them," he said.

The Flames announced right winger Kris Chucko re-signed. Chucko, 23, was the team's first-round pick, 24th overall, in 2004. He has spent the past three seasons mainly in the AHL ... For those who want a head start on a sweater of their favourite player, the team's website has listed what numbers the newcomers will wear. Of note, Jay Bouwmeester will wear No. 4, Staffan Kronwall (8), Brian McGrattan (10), Fredrik Sjostrom (11), Nigel Dawes (15), Brandon Prust (33), Jason Jaffray (38), Riley Armstrong (40) and Garth Murray (41). Adam Pardy is switching to No. 7 from 55.
