The Calgary Flames will relocate their top affiliate to Abbotsford after receiving a majority vote from the AHL board of governors Tuesday morning in Chicago.

The AHL squad will be in the Lower Mainland in time for the 2009-10 season.

The Flames have signed a 10-year affiliation agreement with a local ownership group to move their team from Moline, Ill., to Abbotsford and play in the new arena the city has just completed.

Before the move could be finalized, it needed league approval.

The team spent two seasons in Quad Cities.

There was some question whether the motion would pass considering Abbotsford's proximity to the other 28 AHL squads -- the closest is Winnipeg -- but the local group has agreed to offset travel costs for other teams.
