REPORT CARD

OVERALL: F

OFFENCE: D-

DEFENCE: F

GOALTENDING: C-

POWERPLAY: F

PENALTY KILL: D

UNSUNG HERO

Steve Mason wasn't the busiest goalie, but his positioning makes every save look easy.

WHY FLAMES LOST

Pick an area, any area of their game. Their penalty kill was weak. The powerplay powerless and defensively they were horrid.

GOAL OF THE GAME

LW Rick Nash's pass to C Manny Malhotra for the one-timer to open the scoring in the first period was a thing of beauty.

SCRATCHES

CALGARY -- C Warren Peters, RW Andre Roy (wrist), D Rhett Warrener (shoulder), D Mark Giordano (shoulder), LW Rene Bourque (ankle), C Wayne Primeau (foot).

COLUMBUS -- D Christian Backman, C Jiri Novotny, D Aaron Rome , C Chris Gratton, LW Fred Modin (knee), LW Jason Chimera (groin), D Ole-Kristian Tollefsen (knee) and C Derick Brassard (shoulder).

WHAT IT MEANS

Thanks to some help from the St. Louis Blues, who beat Vancouver last night, the Flames remain three points ahead of the Canucks atop the Northwest Division.

NOTABLES

LW Todd Bertuzzi returned to game action after missing 11 outings to heal a surgically scoped knee. He joined C Olli Jokinen and RW Jarome Iginla on the top line ... C Warren Peters sat out as a healthy scratch, and D Adam Pardy took a spot up front on the fourth line ... G Miikka Kiprusoff was pulled after the Blue Jackets scored a third goal 3:04 into the second period ... It seemed like Calgary hardly touched the puck. Part of the reason was their brutal faceoff percentage (27% after two periods).
