THREE STARS

1. Evgeni Malkin, Penguins -- Just one assist, but his shot led to the first goal and he was the best player on the ice all night.

2. Marc-Andre Fleury, Penguins -- Earned the shutout with a few clutch stops.

3. Miikka Kiprusoff, Flames -- Gave his team a chance to win. Had no chance on the Penguins goals.

UNSUNG HERO

Jordan Staal was given an opportunity to shut down Flames stars Olli Jokinen and Jarome Iginla, and he didn't disappoint.

WHY FLAMES LOST

Two big mistakes cost them goals, and they couldn't catch a break to score one of their own in a hard-fought game that could have gone either way until the third period.

HIT OF THE GAME

Former Anaheim winger Chris Kunitz threw a forearm shiver into Flames C Craig Conroy in the neutral zone that sent the veteran flying.

GOAL OF THE GAME

Lumbering d-man Hal Gill isn't much for offence, but he took the puck on the tail end of a long give-and-go with Evgeni Malkin and roofed his second goal of the season to give the Pens a 2-0 lead in the third.

WHAT IT MEANS

Their tenuous lead over Canucks atop the Northwest Division remains at three points, and both play tonight.
