Flames, Sharks to jump-start 2009-10 in Finland?
By RANDY SPORTAKSUN MEDIA

It could be a European road trip for the Calgary Flames to start the 2009-10 season.

The Flames will reportedly meet the San Jose Sharks for a pair of games in Helsinki, two of the six teams to face off in Europe.

Contacted last night, Flames president Ken King could only reply: "We would entertain such a notion should it become available."

The biggest draw for the Flames to be chosen by the league to play in Finland is undoubtedly goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff. The Sharks have no Finnish players on their roster.

According to Hockey Night in Canada's Scott Morrison, the Detroit Red Wings and the St. Louis Blues would play in Stockholm, Sweden, while the Chicago Blackhawks and the Florida Panthers would meet in Prague, Czech Republic.

The tilts can't be announced until details are finalized, including venues, promoters and financial guarantees.

The Flames and the Sharks kicked off the 1998-99 regular season with games in Japan.

In its quest to reach more fans across the globe, the NHL has held games overseas the past couple of years.

This season kicked off with the New York Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning meeting in Prague, while the Ottawa Senators and the Pittsburgh Penguins faced off in Stockholm.

The Anaheim Ducks and the L.A. Kings opened the '07-08 season in London, England.
