Maple Leafs D Mike Van Ryn spent Saturday night in hospital after a check from behind by Montreal Canadiens F Tom Kostopoulos, who rammed him into the end boards in the first period.

Van Ryn, acquired from Florida in the trade for D Bryan McCabe, was left with a concussion, a cut on his forehead, a broken nose and a broken pinkie finger by the hit.

Kostopoulos was given a major penalty for boarding and ejected, but Leafs coach Ron Wilson said that's not enough.

"I don't understand those kinds of hits," Wilson said.

"I've seen our Ryan Hollweg do it. We have to find a way to get these hits from behind and head shots out of the game. You can't say a player can't turn. It's his responsibility to go back and get the puck and the guy who makes the hit has the responsibility to make sure the (other player) isn't vulnerable."

LOMBARDI RETURN DOUBTFUL

Flames C Matthew Lombardi was on the two-game road swing, skating with his teammates, but didn't sound overly optimistic about returning to the lineup too soon.

PRIMEAU LOOKS FOR COUNTER

Of the 15 forwards on the roster, only C Wayne Primeau has yet to score a goal ... In G Curtis McElhinney's two starts in the NHL, his team has scored just one goal for him. Talk about a lack of support ... Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson fell out of favour in San Jose after the Sharks continually disappointed in the playoffs, getting to the Western Conference semifinal -- but not beyond -- in all three of the post-lockout seasons. They beat the Flames in the opening round last year ... Get to the 'Dome early. The team will have a pre-game ceremony for Remembrance Day ... Battling a flu-like bug, the Flames had the option of skating or doing an off-ice workout yesterday. Team captain Jarome Iginla and C Mike Cammalleri were sent home after a team meeting with the flu.
