The first record was a simple one -- and the Calgary Stampeders wasted no time making sure Nik Lewis got it.

On the first play yesterday of a 37-16 spanking of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Stamps quarterback Henry Burris zipped a hitch pass to Lewis.

It marked the receiver's 85th consecutive game with a reception, breaking the franchise record he shared with Allen Pitts.

But the slotback didn't stop there, and by the end of the game, he would have two more achievements to toast.

"I didn't want that to be my only catch," Lewis said. "I didn't want to say, 'I caught a screen and that was the only catch I had all game.' I was happy to be part of the game plan."

In the fourth quarter, Burris found a wide-open Lewis for a 32-yard gain that put the receiver over the 1,000-yard mark on the season. It's the fifth straight year he hit that mark, breaking the franchise record he shared with former receivers Travis Moore and Terry Vaughn.

Barrick Nealy came in after that drive and found Lewis for his 10th reception of the game, which is a career high.

Doing this in a season where he has battled knee and rib injuries is satisfying for Lewis.

"It's pride. Going through the injuries I've gone through this year, it makes it even better," Lewis said.

"Everybody asks me, 'Once you get the record, are you going to sit down?' No. My goal is still the same -- get to the Grey Cup and win it.

"The records feel good, but it shows the type of players I've played with. The credit goes to them. The receiving corps the past four years has been amazing. Being with (Jeremaine) Copeland and (Ken-Yon) Rambo, they take a lot of attention, and that opens things up for me."

Stampeders coach John Hufnagel made sure to get the ball to Lewis on the first play so he wouldn't be playing tense worrying about the record.

It certainly worked.

"What a game," Hufnagel said. "I had the honour to coach Allen Pitts, and I know the type of player he was.

"And for Nik to be accomplishing those type of records, it speaks volumes on Nik Lewis."
