BANFF -- Hey, wasn't Todd Bertuzzi supposed to always be dour?

That was the reputation, but after a weekend away with his Calgary Flames teammates enjoying Banff and the surrounding area for a team golf tournament and team bonding, Bertuzzi said he's having a blast.

"Ask all the new guys how much fun they're having. It's been a good time so far," he said.

And that was after yesterday's full-hour practice at a high altitude that had them doing a little extra huffing and puffing.

The Flames' weekend in Banff included golf Saturday, while Sunday was spent doing team-building exercises -- ropes courses at the Banff Centre.

It was a chance for the squad, especially the newcomers, to get to know each other, build communication and trust.

And have fun.

"At the end of it, I think some guys get more out of it than they thought they would have," said forward Curtis Glencross. "It's personal skills, lots of it. If we can communicate better as a team, it'll help us out."

Captain Jarome Iginla said the weekend getaway was the perfect tonic before the final preparations to the season opener Thursday in Vancouver.

"You go through camp and everybody's intense, everybody's focused just on preparing and getting prepared, so it's a chance to regroup for a couple of days and hang out -- outside the rink. We always see each other at the rink, so it was good," he said. "Now it's time to get back to business. We're reloaded and ready for the season."
