Prospect camp was fun, but Mikael Backlund's big test is just around the corner.

The talented 19-year-old gets his first taste of true NHL competition today when the Calgary Flames kick off the on-ice portion of training camp at the Saddledome.

He was back home in Sweden by this time a year ago, but gets to see how he'll do sharing the ice with such stars as Jarome Iginla, Dion Phaneuf and Miikka Kiprusoff.

"I'm really excited for that. I'm really looking forward to it," said Backlund, who will either make the Flames roster or return to his Swedish men's squad after camp.

At this point, he's still unsure what his chances are to stick.

Four pre-season games in four nights next week will give him a chance to suit up with and against some talented players, and he's ready for the evaluation.

"I'm looking forward to get to know how good the NHL is," said Backlund. "I've never been training with these guys. I don't know how good it is. I just watch it on TV.

"I know it's good, but I don't know how good -- and how good I am against those guys. That's going to be very good to see, how I do."
