Watching Mike Keenan in the stands observing the kids on the ice, you can't help but think of the reality show Making the Cut.

Unlike the TV series, the youngsters on the Don Hartman Sportsplex ice yesterday aren't in need of second chances, but they were under the watchful eye of the Calgary Flames' new bench boss, who was a main talent evaluator on Making the Cut.

"In some regards, it is (similar)," Keenan said yesterday after the two groups of prospects faced off against each other. "You try to get a grasp of the skill set of the players, their abilities, get to know them a bit off the ice.

Changing the schedule to allow an hour-long scrimmage ramped up the competitiveness on the final day.

"I like to see that part, the competitive aspects brought to the surface," Keenan said.

After 60 minutes, the Red and Black sides were tied 6-6. Cam Cunning, had two for Team Red while Brett Sutter netted a pair for Team Black. Brandon Prust, Dustin Boyd, Derek Couture and Tim Ramholt (although the puck was tipped by someone in front) added goals for Red. Andrei Taratukhin, Per Jonsson, Mikey Renaud and J.D. Watt also scored for Black.

Team Red won the lengthy shootout 3-2.
