Moments after being announced yesterday as the Calgary Booster Club's male athlete of the year, Miikka Kiprusoff was asked to speak at the podium.

"No, I'm good over here," said the shy Calgary Flames goaltender to much laughter.

Kiprusoff may not be a public speaker but it's a well-deserved honour.

Kiprusoff, the NHL's reigning Vezina and Jennings trophy winner, Hart Trophy finalist and first-team all-star, was named the Scott-Mamini Memorial Award honouree.

"Playing here a couple of years now, it's a big honour," Kiprusoff said.

The Finnish-born netminder set a franchise record for wins (42) and shutouts (10) in a season during the 2005-06 campaign.

He's the third Calgary Flames goaltender to be lauded for the honour. Reggie Lemelin (1984) and Mike Vernon (1989 and 1998) were the others.

Also yesterday, the Booster Club announced speed skater Cindy Klassen is the Henry Viney Trophy winner for the third year in a row.

The awards will be officially presented at the 54th Annual Sportsman of the Year Dinner on March 26.
