Jarome Iginla's outstanding performance through December earned the Calgary Flames captain the NHL's first-star selection for the month.

"It was a fun month," he said before facing the Vancouver Canucks last night at the Saddledome.

"A lot of things went well for our team.

"I think it was our best month as a group. A lot of guys had really good months.

"It's an honour to win that but it's a new month and it'd be nice to get off to a good start."

Iginla led all NHL scorers in December with 26 points (10-16-26) in 14 games.

He hit the scoresheet in all but three games and racked up a trio of four-point nights as well as a three-point game on New Year's Eve.

Detroit goaltender Dominik Hasek was named second star, and Pittsburgh centre Sidney Crosby was the third selection.
