Wings 3 Flames 2

RANDY SPORTAK -- Calgary Sun

, Last Updated: 9:46 AM ET

1. Nicklas Lidstrom, Wings. Detroit captain was great at both ends of the ice.

2. Tomas Holmstrom, Wings. Another garbage goal. Is there a player in the league better at screening?

3. Miikka Kiprusoff, Flames. Held his team in it for 50 minutes.

UNSUNG HERO

Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk generated a couple of scoring chances by simply trying to skate through the Flames defencemen.

WHY THE FLAMES LOST

Because they fell behind by a pair of goals -- again -- in the first period and couldn't muster enough offence of their own to pull even.

HUGE HIT

Some welcome committee, that Kirk Maltby. Dustin Boyd's NHL debut came with a bone-crushing hit courtesy of the Red Wings forward.

FIGHT CARD

None.

SCRATCHES

CALGARY -- C Jamie Lundmark and LW Byron Ritchie were sat for the new kids. C Stephane Yelle (ankle) and LW Eric Nystrom (shoulder) are on the IR.

DETROIT -- D Mathieu Schneider (groin) and D Andreas Lilja (back) were too hurt to go, joining D Brad Norton (shoulder) on the limp. No. 3 goalie Joe MacDonald was scratched.

BURNING QUESTION

Where's the passion in this Flames team? Will they ever find it in their game and turn their season around?

WHAT IT MEANS

The Flames have now lost three in a row and six of of the last seven.

NOTABLE

Newly summoned C Dustin Boyd started by centring Tony Amonte and Jeff Friesen, while LW Brandon Prust patrolled the left side on a unit with Marcus Nilson and Darren McCarty for his first shift. Of course, the units changed throughout the game.
