CAPITALS 4 FLAMES 2

SUN THREE STARS

1. Richard Zednik, Capitals -- Got a pair past Miikka Kiprusoff, including the winner in the third.

2. Dainius Zubrus, Capitals -- Scored twice, hit the crossbar and did his best to set up his teammates for a couple more.

3. Kristian Huselius, Flames -- Creative moves and a deadly shot to open the scoring.

UNSUNG HERO:

G Olaf Kolzig, Capitals -- Many were from the perimeter but the Flames did take 39 shots at Ollie the Goalie.

WHY THE FLAMES LOST:

Another spiritless game. Their trademark energy seems to be missing. Despite outshooting the Caps, the Flames didn't get too many chances from in close.

BIG GOAL:

Richard Zednik's breakaway tally through Miikka Kiprusoff's legs midway through the third period was huge for the Capitals as they padded their lead.

FIGHT CARD

None.

SCRATCHES

CALGARY -- D Mark Giordano (healthy), C Stephane Yelle (leg/ankle, IR), F Eric Nystrom (shoulder, IR).

WASHINGTON -- F Rico Fata (healthy), C Jakub Klepis (healthy), D Steve Eminger (healthy).

BURNING QUESTION:

What will it take to inspire better play from what should be a decent Flames team?

WHAT IT MEANS:

That hole is getting deeper by the day. The Flames hoped to dig their way out with a three-game homestand but dropped the last two.

NOTABLES:

Caps D Bryan Muir got away with what would have been an automatic penalty shot for the Flames when he touched the puck in the crease after bowling into his goalie late in the first period.

UP NEXT:

Calgary Flames at Detroit Red Wings, Joe Louis Arena, tomorrow, 5:30 p.m., TSN.
