FLAMES 6 COYOTES 1

SUN THREE STARS

1. F Tony Amonte, Flames -- Shorthanded goal started the rout.

2. F Matthew Lombardi, Flames -- This could have gone to one of the top three forwards but Lombardi was a notch better.

3. G Miikka Kiprusoff, Flames -- Some great saves at critical moments to help his team ramp up confidence.

UNSUNG HERO:

D Andrew Ference, Flames -- Hard work in his own end early set the tone for the team.

WHY THE FLAMES WON:

Effort. A much better start to the game and improvement on both sides of the special teams coin.

BIG SAVE:

Miikka Kiprusoff made a quick pair of beauties in the second period on Enver Lisin but his stretching leg save in the first to rob former Canucks defenceman Ed Jovanovski of a sure goal while preserving a 1-0 lead was a game-changer.

FIGHT CARD

Props to Darren McCarty for taking on Josh Gratton and later standing up to big Georges Laraque but there wasn't much he could do but hold tight after the two dropped gloves late in the first period.

BURNING QUESTION:

Were the Flames that good or the Coyotes that bad?

WHAT IT MEANS:

A 3-4-1 overall record and a reason to be a little more optimistic the Flames can overcome their rough start.

NOTABLES:

Coyotes star Shane Doan has been battling a bad back and had to go to the dressing room during the second period for treatment and didn't return ... Chuck Kobasew's first-period goal marked only the second time the Flames have scored first in a game this year ... Darren McCarty surpassed 1,400 career penalty minutes 2:36 into the game with his first scrap.

UP NEXT:

Nashville Predators at Flames, Saturday at 8 p.m., FAN 960, No TV.
