Rogers has a face for television, too

TORONTO -- The city has a reputation for being over the top.

Sports icons can't go anywhere without being hounded for a snippet of dialogue, an autograph or a snapshot.

But for those who visit just once every three years thanks to the conference-heavy NHL scheduling, even the Toronto fishbowl can be considered a treat.

"I know a lot of people complain of maybe too much," said former player turned radio broadcaster Mike Rogers.

"But when you're here just once in a year, I think not only for the players but for people like myself, it is quite exciting."

Future Hall-of-Famer Peter Maher's wingman on FAN 960 Flames broadcasts was dipped into the media fryer during Calgary's short stay in Hogtown.

While the Toronto Maple Leafs took their morning skate Saturday, Rogers was participating as a panellist for Leafs TV.

And that was secondary to his adventure a day earlier, when Rogers joined Flame Darren McCarty on TSN's Off The Record.

"I was thrilled to do it," said Rogers. "As soon as that camera comes on and you know you're on national TV, you don't want to say anything stupid right off the bat."
