Hockey night in Calgary!

Having been in training camp mode for more than a week, Brent Krahn has an extra spring in his step.

Told yesterday he'll be part of the Calgary Flames squad that will face Florida in tonight's pre-season tilt at the Saddledome (6 p.m.), Krahn can't wait to face live fire.

"It's where you make your mark," said the netminder looking to do enough to become the backup goalie with the NHL squad. "Practices are when you work hard and show you're doing the right things and paying attention to details but when it comes to games ... you want to put that together."

Flames head coach Jim Playfair was reluctant to unveil his whole roster for tonight's clash.

Krahn, who went through the team's rookie camp, isn't going to be like the handful of veterans who'll only have a few high-tempo practices under their belts before hitting the ice.

"I was fortunate to be in rookie camp and been at this for eight or nine days, so I'm in the swing of things," he said.

Florida head coach/GM Jacques Martin told media covering his team will feature former Flames Martin Gelinas and Steve Montador and will have Ed Belfour will be in goal. Former Vancouver Canuck Todd Bertuzzi is not expected to play.

Flames defenceman Mark Giordano is also expecting to suit up, a golden chance to knock heads with skaters other than his own Flames teammates.

"It's gonna be awesome to play against other guys finally," said Giordano, whose most intense action thus far was a pair of intra-squad games during rookie camp. "You try to keep all the games the same but it's a different team. It's gonna be a hard-nosed game because guys are trying to earn jobs on both sides."

In his case, Giordano is in a fight for the seventh defenceman spot, with others such as Richie Regehr, Brad Ference and Tim Ramholt also in the hunt for a NHL job instead of skating for AHL Omaha.
