Sutter's job is safe

While presenting sweaters to his newest players, Flames GM Darryl Sutter made a proclamation.

As he handed goaltender Jamie McLennan his No. 29 jersey, Sutter said: "Just so everybody knows, Jamie is not the new general manager."

The digs at the New York Islanders continue from coast to coast.

A team that's become more of a punchline than contender, the Islanders took their silliness to a new level this week firing GM Neil Smith after less than six weeks on the job and handing the title to Garth Snow, who had to retire from his backup goalie role.

McLennan, who started his career with the Isles, shot down any belief he was angling to take Sutter's job.

"I told him yesterday when we had meetings, 'I'm just here to be the backup,' " McLennan said. "I don't know what to say about it."

Other than being surprised -- like everybody else -- McLellan is curious how things will work out for Snow.

"It seems things are gonna be by committee and Garth will be a figurehead of that committee," McLennan said. "I know Garth, we have a lot of mutual friends and he's been to my house in Edmonton. He's a good guy ... I wish him well."

The startling turn of events doesn't have McLennan thinking of following that route.

"To be thrust into that would be tough," he said.
