Sutter flattered by Gretz

Minutes after announcing his coaching days were over with the Calgary Flames, Darryl Sutter was asked if it precluded him from being a coaching candidate for Team Canada at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

"I don't even know when it is," shrugged Sutter, drawing a huge roar of laughter before being reminded it was in 2010.

"That's a long time from now."

Although Sutter made his decision to focus on his GM duties months ago, his naming of Jim Playfair as his replacement comes just three days after Wayne Gretzky suggested Sutter would be a front-runner with Craig MacTavish to coach the Olympic squad.

"Geez," said a clearly uncomfortable Sutter when asked at yesterday's press conference if he'd consider the job.

"It's nice to be suggested as a candidate. Obviously, the top candidates are very successful and experienced coaches. It's nice to be recognized but as far as inclusion or preclusion, it's not something I've really thought about."

Team president Ken King was similarly amused by Sutter's first public response to the question and said he's OK with whatever his GM might want to do.

"Darryl makes good decisions and if he decided that was in his sphere of things to do, I would support him," said King.
