It's still Sutter's town

Darryl Sutter is still loved in this city.

But chances are he's no longer loved -- or, at least, heeded -- in the Calgary Flames' locker-room.

That's the message Sun readers delivered in our annual You Be The Boss poll.

More than 800 of you went online last week to grade the team's players and management; to answer our four burning questions; and to leave comments about a season that began with Stanley Cup dreams and ended in bitter disappointment, with a first-round shutout loss in Game 7 to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

Our poll shows few people blame Sutter -- or anyone on his coaching staff -- for the early playoff exit.

A whopping 92% of respondents said Sutter should either keep his job or keep his job and get a raise, to boot.

Now that's a vote of confidence.

Obviously, our readers remember the Flames' lean years of the late-'90s, early-'00s and acknowledge Sutter is the man who turned around the team's fortunes.

But Sutter's time behind the bench may need to end, according to you.

Almost two-thirds of respondents believe Flames players have tuned out Sutter, who has said for years he'd one day like to hand the coaching reins to someone else and concentrate on his GM duties.

That day, according to you, might need to arrive sooner rather than later -- a common sentiment in your letters to us (see Page 5)

Yet the vast majority of respondents agreed with Sutter's off-season decision not to re-sign forwards Craig Conroy and Martin Gelinas -- two popular members of 2004 Stanley Cup finalist squad.

And most readers favoured Sutter's minor tinkering at this spring's trade deadline.

Today, we present your views on Flames management.

Tomorrow, we'll publish your opinions on the players. You won't want to miss it -- unless your name is Roman Hamrlik.
