TURNING POINT:

It's allowed. Chris Simon's foot drag, not a kick, that put the puck in the net early in the second period pulled the Flames even and ignited their attack.

- - -

BIG SAVE:

Not long after the Avs made it 4-3, and moments after hitting the crossbar, Milan Hejduk was set up at the doorstep but Miikka Kiprusoff denied the sniper.

- - -

HARD HIT:

As the Avs were killing a penalty, Jim Dowd was trying to play a puck in his feet. That's when Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf jumped up from his point position and sent Dowd to the ice with a bone-crushing hit.

- - -

UNSUNG HERO:

Byron Ritchie saw a season-high in ice time, set up Simon's goal and was a plus-2.

- - -

SCRATCHES:

* CALGARY -- D Jordan Leopold (groin) joined an injured brigade that includes D Rhett Warrener (knee), LW Mike Leclerc (wrist), LW Marcus Nilson (knee) and C Jamie Lundmark (eye).

* COLORADO -- LW Steve Konowalchuk (wrist), D Ossi Vaananen (ankle), RW Marek Svatos (shoulder), G Jose Theodore (heel) and LW Alex Tanguay (knee) are all out.

- - -

BURNING QUESTION:

Can the Flames pull away from the pack with another gritty effort in Edmonton tonight?

- - -

WHAT IT MEANS:

Sole possession of first place in the Northwest Division for the Flames. Calgary has a game in hand on Colorado.

- - -

NOTEWORTHY:

Joe Sakic is now one goal back of Mike Bossy (573) for 17th spot on the NHL's all-time list ... NHL great Jean Beliveau was in attendance ... With his two points, Jarome Iginla moved into a tie with Kent Nilsson for fifth spot on the Flames all-time list at 562. Gary Suter is fourth (565).

- - -

GAME DAY:

Edmonton thumped Los Angeles 4-0 Thursday night to win for the third time in four games. They Oilers have only five wins in their last 13 games but a 5-3-5 mark in that time.

- - -

HEAD-TO-HEAD:

This is the eighth and final meeting of the season. Calgary has put together a 4-1-2 record against their provincial rivals this season.

- - -

NOTES:

Georges Laraque (hip flexor) is day-to-day ... Sergei Samsonov, acquired at the trade deadline has a dozen points in 11 games with Edmonton ... The Oilers sport a pedestrian 17-14-6 home record.
