SUN THREE STARS
1. JORDAN LEOPOLD, FLAMES
2. JAMIE LUNDMARK, FLAMES
3. ROMAN HAMRLIK, FLAMES
Flames RW Shean Donovan's weak goal in the second period took any wind remaining out of the Blues' sails.
Flames G Miikka Kiprusoff made a pair of quick stops on the same play in the first period but it was his second that was difficult. First, he closed quarters on Keith Tkachuk's wraparound attempt, then sped across the crease to stop Jay McClement on the rebound. The Flames netminder again robbed McClement by outwaiting him at the side of the net and getting his glove on a shot.
Dion Phaneuf drilled Jay McClement behind the Flames net in the first period, rattling the boards and stopping the Blues forward from advancing the puck.
Darren McCarty's opening goal was important. The Flames came out flat in the first period and needed that first score to build on.
CALGARY -- C Matthew Lombardi and D Bryan Marchment were forced to watch the action. D Rhett Warrener (knee) and F Mike Leclerc (wrist) are not on the road trip.
ST. LOUIS -- F Jesse Boulerice and D Bryce Salvador (shoulder) sat out. F Jeff Hoggan (clavicle), F Vladimir Orszagh (knee), G Jason Bacashihua (upper body), D Barret Jackman (jaw) and C Ryan Johnson (foot), D Eric Brewer (shoulder) and G Curtis Sanford (knee) are on injured reserve.
Can the Flames win back-to-back contests on consecutive nights for the first time this season?
WHAT IT MEANS:
The Flames move back to .500 on the road and reclaim a three-point lead over Colorado in the Northwest Division.
The Flames get another crack at a team on a losing streak tonight when they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Jackets have lost five straight and are 3-9-1 in their last 13 games ... Blue Jackets D Bryan Berard, who is out for the season with a back injury, will have surgery next week ... Columbus is struggling on the penalty kill, allowing 16 goals against in the past 13 games for a 77.1% efficiency rating. Head coach Gerard Gallant told the Columbus Dispatch offensive stars Rick Nash and Nikolai Zherdev will get more time on the PK down the stretch, which doesn't sound like an inspired solution considering their lack of defensive prowess ... The Flames haven't won games on back-to-back nights in 10 tries this season.
