Game Over

RANDY SPORTAK -- Calgary Sun

, Last Updated: 8:55 AM ET

NEXT GAME: DALLAS STARS AT FLAMES

TOMORROW AT 7 P.M., TV: SPORTSNET, RADIO: FAN 960

SUN THREE STARS:

1. DAVID LEGWAND, Predators -- A pair of goals for the winning side.

2. DION PHANEUF, Flames -- Another goal and an offensive catalyst.

3. TOMAS VOKOUN, Predators -- Was stormed over the final 30 minutes.

TURNING POINT:

David Legwand's second goal of the night, 90 seconds after Calgary tied the game early in the second period restored the lead. Greg Johnson's shorthanded marker later in the frame served to be the game winner.

BIG SAVE:

Nashville's Greg Zanon came in from the point and had an open net for his sharp angled shot only to see Miikka Kiprusoff's right leg come out and make the incredible stop.

HARD HIT:

Dion Phaneuf stepped into Scott Nichol and ran over the smaller Predator with a monster hit. Nichol, with a legitimate belief about the hit being interference, gave Phaneuf a couple of whacks.

UNSUNG HERO:

Nashville's Jerred Smithson collected a pair of assists on what was the Preds scoring line and did some gritty work in the defensive zone.

SCRATCHES:

CALGARY -- RW Darren McCarty (flu) was a surprise viewer. He joined D Cale Hulse, C Byron Ritchie and D Roman Hamrlik (hand).

PREDS -- D Danny Markov (ankle) and RW Scott Upshall (hip) joined a sick bay that already included C Vernon Fiddler (concussion), D Mark Eaton (knee), C Yanic Perreault (knee) and RW Scott Walker (wrist).

BURNING QUESTION:

What will it take for the Flames to beat the speedy Preds?

WHAT IT MEANS:

Calgary's lead over the pack is reduced to one point thanks to Colorado's victory. The Flames (with 77 points) do hold three games in hand on Colorado (76) and two on Vancouver (75).

NOTEWORTHY:

On the first shift, Rhett Warrener left for the dressing room favouring his right leg after hitting Nashville's Greg Johnson and didn't return. The Flames said he suffered a charley horse ... Nashville D Kimmo Timonen also left the game for good after being hit in the hand by a Dion Phaneuf shot. He went for x-rays ... Calgary's first shot didn't come until Stephane Yelle's long wrister more than seven minutes into the tilt ... With his assist on David Legwand's game-opening goal, Steve Sullivan collected his 500th career point ... Flames GM/head coach Darryl Sutter was going for career coaching victory 399.
