NEXT GAME: FLAMES AT NEW YORK RANGERS

TUESDAY AT 5 P.M., TV: NONE, RADIO: FAN 960

SUN'S THREE STARS:

1. Sami Salo, Canucks. Two goals from the hard-shooting defenceman.

2. Miikka Kiprusoff, Flames. Outstanding second period earned a point.

3. Dion Phaneuf, Flames. A ton of ice time from the rookie.

- - -

TURNING POINT:

The penalty parade late in the game and overtime led to Sami Salo's equalizer with 30 seconds remaining and Brendan Morrison's game-winner in extra time.

- - -

BIG SAVE:

Not long after the Flames opened the scoring, Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff robbed Markus Naslund. The Canucks captain was alone in the right circle when the puck came to him and sent what looked to be a sure goal on net only to see a diving Kiprusoff reach out with his trapper.

- - -

HARD HIT:

Calgary's Matthew Lombardi was trying to work his way into the Canucks zone with the puck but was blasted with a hard, but clean, check from Kevin Bieksa.

- - -

UNSUNG HERO:

Darren McCarty, along with linemates Tony Amonte and Stephane Yelle, was instrumental killing penalties and causing havoc all over the ice. McCarty's block on Sami Salo's point shot would have sent most to the sidelines.

- - -

SCRATCHES:

* CALGARY -- With D Roman Hamrlik (knee), D Bryan Marchment (knee) and C Byron Ritchie (knee) back in Calgary, it left LW Jason Wiemer the lone scratch.

* VANCOUVER -- G Dan Cloutier (knee), D Ed Jovanovski (groin), C Rick Rypien (leg) were joined by RW Richard Park.

BURNING QUESTION:

Are there many games better than a Vancouver-Calgary tilt?

- - -

WHAT IT MEANS:

A four-point edge on Vancouver and five-point bulge on Edmonton -- with a game in hand -- in the chase for the Northwest Division title for the Flames.

- - -

NOTEWORTHY:

During Vancouver's recent road trip, Trevor Linden played his 1,200th NHL game. He's the all-time Canucks leader in gamse played 879 counting last night ... Rhett Warrener skated in NHL game 599 last night ... Miikka Kiprusoff had a shutout string snapped at 122:02.
