Yelle escapes serious ankle injury

On the same night Stephane Yelle broke his scoring drought, he narrowly escaped a broken bone.

The Calgary Flames' shorthanded specialist potted the team's third goal -- while killing a penalty, no less -- during the first period of a 3-0 shutout win over the Boston Bruins at the Saddledome Saturday night. Minutes later, Yelle blocked a shot with his ankle, ending his night prematurely.

He was whisked away for X-rays but the news was good yesterday.

"The X-rays are negative," said Yelle, limping only slightly. "It's still sensitive today because it's only been 12 hours. Usually after 24 hours it gets better. We'll see in the morning."

Yelle hopes to play tonight in Edmonton.

"Blocking shots is part of my game. Sometimes I get hit and it doesn't hurt, sometimes it does."
