Donovan rides out a lengthy drought

DENVER, Colo. -- Calgary Flames speedster Shean Donovan didn't fret much over his scoring slump this month.

With the Flames off to an 8-1 record in November, it was easy to overlook the fact Donovan hasn't had a goal since Game 2.

But the winger isn't afraid to admit he wants more than just wins.

"It's nice winning but you want to help out," said Donovan yesterday. "The main thing is winning, so that was good during the streak but the other night we could have used a goal, it would have helped."

Donovan, who says he's "more than a little frustrated" by his goal drought -- which now stands at 20 games -- hasn't let the slump affect his disposition.

The cheery, 6-ft. 2-in. product of Timmins, Ont., was able to laugh yesterday while talking about his misfortune. Maybe because the 30-year-old veteran knows his time is about to come. If history repeats itself, as the saying goes, Donovan is due for a scoring outburst.

He scored a career-high 18 goals with the Flames in 2003-04 but what many people don't know is Donovan potted half of them during a six-game explosion.

The streak started Nov. 27 during a 6-5 overtime loss to Colorado at the 'Dome. Donovan then scored a pair against Vancouver in a 4-4 tie Nov. 29, potted singles -- including a couple of game-winners -- against San Jose, Vancouver and Minnesota and capped off his six-game streak with a hat-trick in a 6-1 win over Pittsburgh Dec. 7.

Could a similar success story be in store, now two years later?

"I hope. I don't know, I can't fortune tell," said Donovan. "You hope. You want some confidence and when you score one, all of a sudden it's like 'how the heck couldn't I score for 19, 20 games or whatever it is.' "

Donovan is currently being centered by Stephane Yelle, who hasn't scored since the season-opener in Minnesota.

"We're battling right now, we're going to have to have a little wager and see who's going to score first," said Donovan. "And then hopefully the snowball is going to go for both of us."
