NEXT GAME: MINNESOTA WILD AT CALGARY FLAMES

TOMORROW AT 7 P.M., TV: SPORTSNET, RADIO: FAN 960

- - -

SUN THREE STARS:

1. Tony Amonte, Flames.

2. Alex Tanguay, Avs.

3. Jordan Leopold, Flames.

- - -

TURNING POINT:

The game appeared to be slipping away from the Flames and seemed lost when Chuck Kobasew was given a highsticking double minor late in the second period. But they killed it and recovered during the intermission.

- - -

BIG SAVE:

With almost exactly one minute remaining in regulation and the Flames up 5-3, Joe Sakic neatly deflected a point shot but Miikka Kiprusoff kicked out his left leg in time to make the clutch stop.

- - -

HARD HIT:

Wasn't much to choose from, with the best being Chuck Kobasew's hard slamming of John-Michael Liles deep in Avs territory.

- - -

UNSUNG HERO:

Craig MacDonald didn't just score his first goal as a Flame but the role player made several clutch plays to keep the forecheck running.

- - -

SCRATCHES:

D Steve Montador was the lone healthy scratch, watching with D Bryan Marchment (ribs), C Byron Ritchie (eye) and C Matthew Lombardi. Colorado sat RW Dan Hinote and D Kurt Sauer.

- - -

BURNING QUESTION:

What happened in the first intermission to help Calgary nearly blow a four-goal lead?

- - -

WHAT IT MEANS:

Calgary's first six-game winning streak since February 1994, and a tie with Vancouver atop the Northwest Division standings.

NOTEWORTHY:

LW Chris Simon returned after missing six games due to a rib muscle injury ... Last night's game, which concluded a two-game road swing, was only the sixth away from the Pepsi Centre for the Avalanche ... Tony Amonte, obviously needing to play Colorado more often, has scored three of his four goals this season against the Avalanche ... Miikka Kiprusoff has been victimized on two of three penalty shots in his career ... Joe Sakic went into the game with 1,416 poings and needing four to tie Adam Oates for 13th spot on the NHL's all-time list. His next goal would be No. 549 and will move him into 21st spot on that chart.
