Game Over

STEVE MACFARLANE -- Calgary Sun

, Last Updated: 8:10 AM ET

SUN THREE STARS:

1. Marcus Nilson, Calgary -- His hard work at both ends of the ice paid off with the winning goal bouncing in off his noggin in the third.

2. Steve Reinprecht, Calgary --Scored the tying goal by collecting a rebound and kicking the puck up to his stick

3. Bryan Berard, Columbus -- Assisted on the Blue Jackets goal.

TURNING POINT:

Steve Reinprecht's pretty tying goal in the third period gave the Flames and their fans new life.

BIG SAVE:

Jarome Iginla had an empty net to shoot at during a powerplay in the first period. Goaltender Marc Denis stretched back to get a piece of Iginla's misplaced backhand attempt to keep the game scoreless.

HARD HIT:

Manny Malhotra smacked Tony Amonte to the ice early in the first period as the Flames veteran reached for a puck after dangling it past a Jackets defender.

UNSUNG HERO:

Jarome Iginla's point streak came to an end but it wasn't for a lack of trying. He played an aggressive game and set an up-tempo pace.

FIGHT CARD:

Darren McCarty and Jody Shelley went at it near centre ice with less than five minutes left in the opening period. Shelley, who is listed at 6 ft. 4 in., 230 lb., nailed McCarty (6 ft. 1 in., 215 lb.) with a hard first punch but the gritty Flames winger held his own the rest of the way. In another mismatch, Byron Ritchie went toe-to-toe with Steven Goertzen after the Jackets d-man nailed Dion Phaneuf with a shoulder. Ritchie fell early but quickly bounced back up for more.

BURNING QUESTION:

Now that Marcus Nilson has his first goal of the season, how long before Jordan Leopold pots one?

WHAT IT MEANS:

The Flames have their first winning streak of the campaign.

NOTEWORTHY:

Defenceman Robyn Regehr suited up for his first regular-season game.
