Game Over

RANDY SPORTAK -- Calgary Sun

, Last Updated: 9:20 AM ET

NEXT GAME: EDMONTON OILERS AT CALGARY FLAMES

THURSDAY AT 7 P.M., TV: SPORTSNET, RADIO: FAN 960

SUN THREE STARS:

1. Curtis Joseph, Coyotes.

2. Roman Hamrlik, Flames

3. Mike Ricci, Coyotes.

TURNING POINT:

Something of a fluky goal in the third period -- Fredrik Sjostrom's high shot came off the glass behind the net and was whacked home by Mike Ricci -- snapped a scoreless draw and the Flames couldn't draw even.

BIG SAVE:

During the same sequence in the second period, the Flames were pressing hard for the first goal but Curtis Joseph twice came up with huge stops. First he blocked an Andrew Ference point shot and then denied Shean Donovan on a point-blank chance.

HARD HIT:

Take your pick. First there was Rhett Warrener lowering the boom on Shane Doan at the Flames blueline, then there was a Dion Phaneuf dandy on Boyd Devereaux and finally Darren McCarty splattering David Tanabe into the end boards.

UNSUNG HERO:

Rhett Warrener blocked two shots in the first period while Calgary was shorthanded and three overall.

FIGHT CARD:

Jason Wiemer and Sean O'Donnell dropped the mitts in the middle of the first. Score it a draw.

SCRATCHES:

CALGARY -- D Robyn Regehr (knee) was joined by C Byron Ritchie and D Steve Montador.

PHOENIX -- G Brian Boucher (groin), D Denis Gauthier (hand), C Krys Kolanos and C Jeff Taffe.

BURNING QUESTION:

Is the obstruction crackdown officially over?

WHAT IT MEANS:

For Calgary, a loss in a winnable game against a team that shouldn't come to the Saddledome and claim two points.

NOTEWORTHY:

Flames C Matthew Lombardi left favouring his right foot or ankle after crashing into the boards early in the third period and did not return ... C Daymond Langkow headed to the bench gingerly when hit in the hand with a puck but didn't miss more than a few minutes ... After stopping Oleg Saprykin last night, G Miikka Kiprusoff is now 1-for-2 over his career facing penalty shots. He was scored on by Richard Park in December 2003 ... The Coyotes had lost all three road games this season.
