How Flames fared vs. Oilers

G MIIKKA KIPRUSOFF: Not counted on much until midway through the game when his big save on Jani Rita's partial breakaway showed he was ready for the puck to drop on the season.

D DION PHANEUF: A typical night for a rookie defenceman, some good plays offset by a couple of miscues.

D ROMAN HAMRLIK: Almost seems like he's playing in slow motion (would we call that Eastern Conference speed), especially on the powerplay.

D JORDAN LEOPOLD:: Probably the team's best defenceman on the night. Was robbed of a reward when his first-period point shot rang off the post.

LW TONY AMONTE: Not much accomplished by the big line. Did have a couple of quality scoring chances but not much more.

C STEPHANE YELLE: Typical gritty effort by the veteran centre but there wasn't much need for his defensive prowess.

RW JAROME IGINLA: A couple of offensive blasts came close to finding the twine but had a few giveaways when trying to thread passes.

RW SHEAN DONOVON: Speedy right wing used his high gear a couple of times but his goal came from a Oilers giveaway.

LW CHRIS SIMON: Arguably the best forward on the night. Made things happen with his size and was a presence and was rewarded twice.

C MATTHEW LOMBARDI: The way he fought off Radek Dvorak to gain possession of the puck and then clear it while killing a penalty showed his defensive skill.

RW CHUCK KOBASEW: Wasn't his best pre-season performance.

C DAYMOND LANGKOW: In the same boat as his linemates, Iginla and Amonte. A few moments on the powerplay but not much else other than some good defensive play.

LW ERIC NYSTROM: Second-period special teams took away from his ice time.

C JASON WIEMER: A couple of punishing checks in an otherwise quiet night.

RW DARREN MCCARTY: Provided the most energy of the forwards, doing a great job on the forecheck, setting up Marcus Nilson on a chance and then doing all the work on the game's first goal.

LW MARCUS NILSON: Had a few shots on goal, though McCarty's play was a big reason for that.

D ROBYN REGEHR: Pleanty of ice time and a couple of blocked shots. Highlight was a bone-crushing hit on Jani Rita.

D MARK GIORDANO: His willingness to jump into the offensive attack is refreshing but has plenty of work to do on defensive play.

D RICHIE REGEHR: Not much ice time but wasn't very noticable good or bad through the match.
