Yelle's first shot at fisticuffs

There's a reason Flames fans hadn't seen Stephane Yelle in a fight before last Friday's pre-season tilt with Edmonton's Shawn Horcoff.

The Flames forward has never dropped the gloves.

And we're not just talking about since he came to Calgary. Yelle said he's never been in a brouhaha. Not with Colorado. Not even in junior.

"I used to score goals and played on the point on the powerplay in junior. I've never been much of a fighter," Yelle said.

Yet, there he was in a tussle with Horcoff amidst a large scrum that included some much more noted pugilists.

"I don't why know it started. He just wanted to fight. It was unexpected but wasn't much," he said. "It's 3-0 with five minutes left and a scrum but he wanted to get going. All I know was I ended up in the penalty box.

"I don't remember much of it. I might have to go back and look at it."

What he'll see was Horcoff landing a few punches on a surprised Yelle before he began to get into the swing of things.

There is some consolation for the Flames centre, though, he did land one blow late.

"Yeah, one on his helmet," he said before breaking into laughter. "I cut my knuckles."

INJURY UPDATE: A total of 33 players remain in camp but yesterday's practice was light by two.

Robyn Regehr and Brantt Myhres didn't take to the Saddledome ice.

Regehr didn't play in the third period Friday night due to what the team said was a sore hip flexor while Myhres hasn't been seen since going for repairs after taking a couple of thunderous punches from Georges Laraque.

Darryl Sutter wasn't worried about Regehr, saying: "He wanted to skate but I'm not going to rush him. He'll skate (today) and that will be it."

As for Myhres: "His eye's still swollen shut. It's pretty tough to skate out there with one eye," Sutter said.

He denied reports Myhres was more seriously injured.

"He doesn't have a fractured orbital bone. If he had a fractured orbital bone, I'd say he had fractured orbital bone."
