NHL Playoffs: DET @ CHI

Reality bittersweet for Matt
By STEVE MacFARLANE -- Calgary Sun

The reality show star's stay in camp was short and bittersweet.

Matt Hubbauer, who won an NHL tryout on CBC's Making the Cut, was one of 16 players re-assigned to the Calgary Flames' AHL affiliate Omaha Knights yesterday.

A clearly disappointed Hubbauer said the reality of his situation is tough.

"It's hard, only a few days in the main camp," he said outside the hallway leading into the Flames dressing room at the Saddledome, a place he couldn't have imagined being just a couple of years ago. "You definitely feel like you could show a lot more but it's a quick turnover in camp this year."

Other forwards to report Friday in Omaha include Thomas Bellemare, Derek Couture, Cam Cunning, Carsen Germyn, Dustin Johner, Darren Lynch, Chris Neiszner, Warren Peters, Cam Severson and Justin Taylor.

Defencemen Zenith Komarniski, Steve Marr, Adam Pardy, Brett Palin, and Brandon Rogers will also report to the Knights.

Rogers, who played with Eric Nystrom at the University of Michigan, and Hubbauer are the only re-assigned players without contracts.

For Hubbauer, earning a deal with the Knights wouldn't be a bad consolation prize.

"(I'll) continue working hard, using my speed out there and try to maybe do a little bit more offensively in this next camp," said Hubbauer.

ICE CHIPS: GM/head coach Darryl Sutter said last week he plans to test Cam Cunning in the AHL. "It's basically the next step for him," said Sutter of the 20-year-old who played in the WHL last season ... Flames president Ken King and Oilers president Patrick LaForge will battle for provincial bragging rights in a floor-hockey shootout in Edmonton this morning as they team up with EnCana in the Shootout for Kids.
