Fantasy NHL: Veteran Stevens still a big hit

The next time Dion Phaneuf is compared to Scott Stevens, he'll know how much that compliment means. The rookie Flames blueliner shared the ice with the veteran Devils defenceman last night and Phaneuf says he came away impressed.

"He was hitting everyone out there and then he scores the winning goal," Phaneuf said, after the Flames lost 2-1 in overtime. With Jarome Iginla in the box for hooking, Stevens scored on a powerplay point shot just 30 second into the extra frame.

"You'd think he was in his 20s the way he was playing out there," Phaneuf said of the 40-year-old Stevens.

The Devils, fighting to get back into playoff contention, controlled the style of play from the opening faceoff and the Flames couldn't break through New Jersey's notoriously tight checking.

Chuck Kobasew, who scored the Flames' only goal in the second period, said the referees turned a blind eye to the Devils' obstruction.

"The second we touched the puck, we felt a tug or a hook," said Kobasew. "This stuff was called earlier in the season but now anything goes."

John Madden scored in the first period for the Devils.
