Roman Turek's hope for an NHL season has apparently faded.

The Flames goaltender had brought his family to Calgary in the fall with the hope a season would be salvaged but has opted to return to the Czech Republic and will play for HC Ceske Budejovice, the club team he played for prior to coming to North America.

It brings the total of Flames across the Atlantic to nine.

Miikka Kiprusoff, Anders Eriksson, Marcus Nilson and Byron Ritchie are in Sweden, while Steve Montador and Steven Reinprecht are in France, Martin Gelinas in Switzerland and Ville Nieminen in Finland.

Turek, whose children were enrolled in school and playing hockey, decided to return to his homeland.

Around 270 NHLers have headed to Europe to ply their trade during the lockout.
