Buffalo Sabres enforcer John Scott received a seven-game suspension for his hit to the head of Boston Bruins forward Loui Eriksson and, believe it or not, that sentence represents a step forward, not backward, in the evolution of the NHL disciplinary process.

There are a lot of people out there who actually wanted Scott banned from the NHL for the hit – an absolutely ridiculous thought – and others who felt nothing less than a 20-game suspension would be just for an enforcer’s hit on a skilled forward.
