No asterisk needed for Sabres' record

At what point did "Coke Classic" revert back to simply "Coke?"

Likewise, when does the statute of limitations run out on referring to the post-lockout NHL as "The New NHL?"

One season in, one Stanley Cup raised and we are still talking about "The New NHL" as if it is some sort of taste test for fans. Clearly, there will be no going back.

Being a bit of a purist, I originally was not in support of the shootout to determine the outcome of an NHL game. Yet I have come to realize this change would not be going the way of "The New Coke" and actually savour this new flavour of the game.

There are those not so easily swayed -- people who continue to resist this change to their NHL. These same folks who now want to fill the record books with asterisks.

Their argument is concise: A win by way of a shootout is not the same as a win in regulation or overtime. Therefore, they should be viewed separately in the record books.

Currently the debate is very loud in southern Ontario as the Buffalo Sabres just took a share of a coveted place in the record books. The Toronto Maple Leafs had held the record for most consecutive wins to start the regular season with 10. The Sabres also picked up 10 wins to start this season, their streak consisting of six wins in regulation and four after 60 minutes. Simple, right? Wrong. The Sabres had the benefit of three shootout wins to extend their streak.

So should we keep two record books? Classic NHL and New NHL? I think not, let's just accept the change. After all, there is no asterisk on a can of Coke explaining that it was formerly "Coke Classic." It just is what it is. To paraphrase an old slogan, "Have an NHL and a Smile."
